Psilocybin Magic Mushrooms and LSD as Ancient Medicine and Modern therapeutic tools

Magic Mushrooms– a sacred, healing substance

by Sharon Hart, M.S. and Norman McVea, Ph.D

Extensive research on psilocybins has shown that sacred substances such as Magic Mushrooms and LSD have a profound affect on the brain, and can be used as therapeutic tools to overcome depression and to help alcohol dependent users quit alcohol entirely. In recent studies by Jama Psychiatry, it was found that the use of Magic Mushrooms was “as effective as the most common anti-depressant.”

This is wonderful news, since continual use of anti-depressants creates many unwanted side effects and/or allergic reactions.  Anti-depressants are chemical compounds, and as such, are foreign to the brain and nervous system, whereas psilocybins are nature’s own way of healing and even enlightening or awakening consciousness in sentient beings. Psilocybins are also being researched for the treatment of trauma and mental illness.

Researchers from the University of California at San Francisco’s have discovered that psilocybin has been shown to trigger a more flexible and expansive brain state that lasts for several weeks, correlated with reductions in depressive symptoms.

In Depression, communication between different networks in the brain is restricted. This is associated with a reduction in cognitive flexibility and a tendency to get stuck in cycles of negative thoughts. Psilocybins cause networks that wouldn’t ordinarily communicate to interact and so to unlock stuck cycles. In the future, psilocybins may be prescribed as medication–natural medication for human disorders. Not just for highs or trips–but to keep us sane and happy!

Dr Michael Bogenschutz, Director of the NYU Langone Center for Psychedelic Medicine, said: “More parts of the brain are talking to more parts of the brain. There’s a possibility of really shifting in a relatively permanent way the functional organization of the brain.”

Some research has indicated that psychedelic substances produce positive impacts, in part, because they promote neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. The authors of a new study were interested in better understanding whether the neuroplasticity induced by psychedelics could be harnessed to enhance learning and memory. What they learned from laboratory experiments was:  “Notably, we found significant LSD-induced changes in the mTOR pathway, a protein kinase involved in multiple neural plasticity events, acting as a hub between plasticity, learning, and memory.” The study was conducted by  Sidarta Ribeiro and others from the Brain Institute, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Natal, Brazil.

For the future, these natural substances could very well also be used to enhance learning and memory at any age–a back to nature approach to forestall aging of the brain and alleviate or  even avoid the ravages of dementia.

Indigenous peoples and communities have been ingesting psilocybin as medicine for millennia.   Pre-Mayan cultures used them as far back in history as 1500 BC–and perhaps even further back as mushroom grew in rain forests all over the world in ancient times.  The first evidence of sacred mushroom use is 10,000 years ago.  Some cave painting in Australia indicate that they were used ceremonially even then, and about 4,000 years ago in Europe.  They were often called “magic” mushrooms because those who ingested them experienced magical states of consciousness.  They were especially used in sacred religious and spiritual ceremonies–for healing or for divination.

In the 1970’s a psilocybin period of great experimentation occurred where what was later dubbed the spiritual decade occurred through much of the world, with hippies and flower power children experimenting with mood altering substances. The Consciousness Movement of the 60’s blossomed into a full blown “happening” in the 70’s–with the brotherly love experience bloomin–especially in Northern California–in many people’s minds matched  and surpassed only by the yogis of India.  In Marin County, California, Richard Alpert, Ph.D. morphed into Ram Dass, and with the assistance of Timothy Leary, led thousands of seekers to the promised land of meditation and higher states of consciousness through psychedelics.

Unfortunately, as with most large movements, greed destroyed the trip to psilocybin heaven, and street drugs took over and diluted and contaminated them,  causing psilocybin use to be curtailed and then outlawed by medical and governmental agencies. And there it seemed to stay underground until more recent times when there  seems to be a psilocybin renaissance underway.

In recent years, psychedelic drugs are being used in more innovative trials across the “Western” world. A clinical trial for psychedelic therapy using music is set to open in London, and a first-of-its-kind research centre for psychedelic drug therapy opened last year. And in England, it is being considered to remove psilocybins from schedule 1 drugs into a de-criminalized position for research.  In America, several states have already made the use of Magic Mushrooms legal and clinical research is being carried on in many research facilities.
